When functioning properly, gutters can extend the life of a home. By directing water away from the physical structure, gutters protect a home's foundation, its siding, and its landscaping.
The key to reliable gutter performance is simple -- keep them clean. Twice annually, experts recommend a thorough gutter cleaning and the project can be a do-it-yourselfer, if you're so inclined.
The basic toolset is likely already on hand:
- A ladder
- A scoop
- A trash bag
- A garden hose
- Protective gear

The Looj Gutter Cleaner Robot features a detachable handle that doubles as a wireless remote control. Using it you control 2.25-inch high Looj as it scoots along inside your gutter and uses a three-stage auger to dislodge and sweep out dirt and leaves.

I was expecting a youtube calamity. Boo!
Cleaning the gutters with a pressure washer can get them cleaner and do it faster. Simply aim the gun down the gutters and it blow them free of all debris. Find it faster and a little less messy to remove all large debris such as leaves, sticks, and other organic matter into a trash bag before using the pressure cleaning to blow them out.
One major advantage to using the pressure washer is that aim the gun down the downspout the high pressure can dislodge or unclog them completely. Usually see a pile of gunk at the base of the downspout after this procedure and the downspouts will flow free again. Another advantage to pressure washing the inside of the gutter runs is the removal of grit buildup from asphalt roofing shingles. This sand-like buildup can weigh down the gutters and it is difficult to remove by hand.
